There must be no room for religious discrimination in Ghana’s educational institutions - Pres. Mahama

Religious discrimination being tackled through MOUs with mission schools

President John Mahama has reiterated that there must be no room for religious discrimination in Ghana’s educational institutions, noting that the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion for all citizens.

Addressing Regional Chief Imams who paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency, President Mahama stressed the need for religious tolerance in schools across the country, stressing that the right to practice one’s faith must be respected and protected in all learning environments.

According to him, the Interior Minister has led discussions that resulted in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on religious tolerance, particularly in mission schools.

"We've also moved on the issue of religious tolerance in schools. Ghana is a nation of diverse religions, and one of the things our constitution guarantees is the freedom of religion; freedom to worship and freedom to express one's religion. It is all captured in the constitution. So there should be no grounds for religious discrimination other on the sides of Christians or on the sides of Muslims.

"There are times when you find the secondary school in a community is a Muslim secondary school, and if children want secondary education or basic education, that is the only school in their community. So they might be Christians or Muslims and it doesn't help that they must be forced to adopt Islam if they're not Muslims and vice versa. So we've had those discussions and we've signed some MoUs on religious tolerance in missions school," he explained.

The Secretary to the Conference of Regional Imams, Alhaji Sullah Abdullah Quondah thanked President Mahama for the additional holiday for Eid al-Fitr celebration describing it as a significant achievement.

"This mandate is an expression of the confidence the people of Ghana have in you. We wish to express our profound gratitude to you for the fulfilment of the promise you made to us in Kumasi in 2023 notably the additional holiday for Eid al-Fitr. We pray that your intention to improve the human resource base of the Muslim 'umar' is materialised - that is the professional and recruitment of Arabic teachers for Islam education unit schools throughout the country," he said.
